Assessments
Global Occupational Therapy Assessment or Assessment of priority areas only
The Global assessment is designed for families who wish to have a comprehensive assessment of the following areas : fine motor skills, gross motor skills & coordination skills, sensory processing skills, emotional regulation skills, self-care & life skills, visual motor integration.

The assessment of priority areas only is designed for families who wish to assess their main areas of concern only. For example, some families are interested to have us assess their child's fine motor skills only. A sensory assessment would also be included in this category, where the O.T. would assess the child's sensory processing skills only.

All assessments are divided in 4 steps :
-
Virtual or in-person parent interview : A parent interview gives the therapist the opportunity to get a good sense of the parents' perspective, priorities and concerns. During the interview, the O.T. goes through a thorough O.T. questionnaire in order to get a full picture of the child's daily function, both at home and at school.
-
In-person clinical assessment (1 to 3 assessment sessions): Meeting with your child for the first time is all about taking the time to get to know them. We use both standardized and non-standardized evaluations to assess your child's abilities, strengths, as well as challenges - this assessment is necessary so we can outline recommendations regarding next steps, including goals & strategies to work on, should you chose to begin treatment with One Step at a Time Occupational Therapy.
-
Family meeting: it is organized following the assessment process to discuss observations & findings. During the meeting, we also make sure to include your personal input regarding what we have observed, and together, we work on determining the best future goals for your child. If you chose to continue with us, a first Occupational Therapy follow-up session will be scheduled for the following week.
-
Assessment Report (only upon request) : If you wish, an O.T. report can be sent out to you within 4-6 weeks of the assessment. Two options are available :
-
Comprehensive Assessment Report: Recommended for parents who chose to do a Global Assessment. It will include all of the therapist's observations, scoring of standardized assessments if applicable, analysis and detailed OT recommendations
-
Initial Consultation Report: Recommended for parents who have a limited budget, or for parents who have had an OT report in the past 1 or 2 years : it includes observations, scoring of standardized assessments if applicable, basic OT recommendations
-
Therapy sessions
Following the assesment process, the O.T. will recommend a frequency for regular therapy sessions, if they feel this would benefit the child's development.

Should you chose to pursue treatment with One Step at a Time O.T. Services, an Occupational Therapy Care Plan - including goals, strategies and recommendations for the next steps - will be put in place with your personal collaboration.

Ongoing regular treatment can be offered to you in 3 different ways, as described below. The format of the sessions will be tailored to meet your needs; please note that we can combine all 3 formats within the O.T. Care Plan if needed.

In-Clinic Sessions
Virtual Sessions
In-clinic sessions are very beneficial for children due to the structured setting and environment. It is also a great opportunity to trial different sensory equipment in the clinic's FULLY EQUIPPED SENSORY GYM!
This session format is perfect for children & families who are not able to drop off/pick-up their child in person for an in-clinic session, and/or for children & families who wish to work on goals virtually, through educational games, and more!
Community Outings
Home Sessions
Community outings can be organized throughout the year, if necessary, to work on functional goals in your child's community. For example, if you wish for your child to learn how to cross the street, pay for items independently in a grocery store, learn to cope with anxiety when visiting new places and new environments, or to simply work on gross motor goals in a community park, this session format can be a very good option !

Home sessions are perfect for children & families wishing to work on functional goals within their home environment! It is also beneficial for children who are anxious to meet us for the first time, or for children who are limited physically and function best at home!

School Visits & Team meetings
Team work and collaboration is extremely important for us. We take the time to complete school/daycare visits (if necessary) in order to observe your child in their learning environment, and we provide recommandations to the team to assure that your child's strengths and skills are generalized outside of therapy sessions.

We are also happy to meet with other members of your child's team, as his Behavioural Consultant, Speech Language Pathologist, Physiotherapist, or any other team member you find beneficial for us to meet!
